It is rather unusual to be inside and using a pair of binoculars, so there must be a story behind this picture.
Two years ago, Charlene and I were on our first major trip. We decided to tour part of West Virginia. We were on our way back, slowly stopping at various locations. I discovered that there was a chapel that gave tours. We love churches, chapels, cathedrals, shrines, basilicas and other religious sites. The art and architecture are stunning in so many places; one of the best features of these locations is the stained glass windows. These colourful creations are a significant draw for us.
The Heinz Chapel is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We have visited this significant American city several times to enjoy its art, architecture, and heritage. There is so much to see that we will be able to make a few more trips to this iconic city.
Heinz was a famous man. We have all undoubtedly tasted his version of ketchup (the Canadian kind is sweeter and better). He amassed a great fortune with his many food products in clear glass bottles. Heinz commissioned the construction of this chapel for his mother and then gifted it to the University of Pittsburgh. Few religious motifs are in this chapel, which resembles any Christian cathedral. The stained glass is about prominent men and women in American history. Being one of the tallest windows in the world, the guide for our visit to this chapel handed us binoculars.
Oddly, binoculars are something I have never figured out how to use. Yeah, I know, it is just looking through it. How hard can that be? But somehow, I find it difficult.
But not Charlene.
She grabbed the binoculars and did her best to see everything that could be seen—and there was a lot.
While looking at the glass, the guide even had the organ play several tunes. I wish I had something like this in my home since I love the sound of the organ.
Thankfully, the tour guide did not pressure us to leave. We were free to enjoy and explore on our own. It is a great feeling to have planned a trip, drive to the location and find out that the person I love is absolutely enjoying herself with a set of binoculars.
