We both like art. We like art so much that we will walk hours in a city or town in search of murals and sculptures and anything else that is beautiful.
Yet, we have vastly different opinions of art museums.
Very different opinions.
We even have discussions (a polite word) on the merits of attending art museums.
Yes, it is true. There is some art that, when I look at it, I have no idea why the museum would display this or even go through the expense of buying it in the first place.
Yes, I have taken my beloved wife to many art museums that made us question how what we saw could be considered art.
And yes, we paid money to see these questionable art museums.
I have agreed that maybe not all art museums are created equal, and maybe we should avoid paying admission, so there is never an argument on if it is a waste of time and especially a waste of money.
So, in my quest to see as many beautiful things in this world, I now seek out free art museums. If it is a bust, no big deal, and if it was great, all the better.
Toledo’s Museum of Art was FANTASITIC!!!!
It was the end of the day, and since it was free, I figured it was an excellent way to round things out. The view from the street was of a vast complex. I figured that much of it would be offices or offices. I have made the mistake of thinking a huge building had a huge display only to look at a small room.
We walked in, and immediately we were impressed. This place was full of grandeur. The outside facade did not lie. We were immediately dazzled with art.
And it was free.
All of it was FREE!
No small free section then if you wanted to see more, there was an admission.
Nope.
Free.
And it was real art. Not the art that we had to question the merits of the art, the meaning of art, or how this was art.
Art for all its worth and glory.
The place was huge. Beautiful rooms that were themed to different times, periods, and cultures. Different styles and all masterfully done.
I could not believe how free it was and how they could afford such a building without charging admission. I had given us at tops one hour here, but we could have used 3 or more. As the closing time approached, we found ourselves starting to rush through it to be able to see it all.
The Museum of Art in Toledo is well worth stopping in. It has very friendly hours being open almost daily and into the evening on some days, which is unheard of for many tourist areas.
Across the street is a smaller glass museum displaying wonderful creations of glasswork—even a historical section dating back thousands of years. I was impressed that glass art has something people have been perfecting for thousands of years.
For the price, you cannot go wrong in stopping in.
