I love visiting art galleries, and when a premium art gallery is open for free, it becomes a priority to visit.  Because our new king was receiving his crown, McMichael Canadian Art Collection was open to the public at no cost to celebrate this event.

When we first discovered day-tripping a few years back, McMichael was one of our first visits.  My goal was to spend as little money as possible since I was about to undergo major surgery and wanted to avoid ending up in a massive debt just in case.  The grounds of this property are free to tour.  There are trailways, and what attracted us was a large sculpture garden.  We did not enter the building because the price was a bit high.

There are a large number of works on display with a beautiful forest setting.  We spent well over an hour just finding all the art pieces.

But this year, because of the free entry, I made it a goal to enter this building and see what is inside.  I am glad we did this!

Like many quality art galleries, there is a wide variety of styles, and just like all art galleries, there are works that I am impressed with, and there are some that I wonder why they even bothered to display.

We would walk through this building, surprised that it never seemed to end and when we finished, we walked through again.  Overall, I was impressed with this gallery.  Most of the works were to my liking, and I was happy to get inside finally.  Right after this, we traveled to AGO where I left a little disappointed because much of the art did not appeal to me.

A worthy stop.

  • Paid parking.  Limited free parking in the downtown core and a bit of a walk if you want to avoid this expense.
  • The price is on the higher side.
  • The grounds and viewing of the sculptures are free and appear accessible daily.
  • A friendly tourist downtown just blocks away.  It is worth the visit.
  • Artwork from the Group of Seven is one display.
