It is not often we go to Maine; this year was our first time. It is a beautiful state with much to explore, and it will be the source of many future vacations. But there is something odd about Maine. If you read Stephen King, Maine is spooky.
I have never read any of Stephen King’s books, but I have seen several movies based on them. We all know The Shining, It, The Mist, Misery, and more. Somehow, he can write a novel a year, sometimes a few novels a year, and always has ideas for more novels. I would love to know how he does this. Maine is the setting for most of his writings. Doing a tour based on Stephen King’s novel locations would be interesting and something to consider in the future.
But we were in Maine now, and our path was taking us through Bangor, where Stephan King lives. I am not much into celebrities, but I did hear he has a nice-looking Victorian home. It was not going to hurt to have a peek.
The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation is located on a quiet street with a lot of historic charm. The road is wide and allows for easy street parking. When we pulled up, several people were already viewing the home of this prolific American writer. Everyone was gob-smacked, with smiles on their faces and enamoured with this location. Everyone was respectful of the neighbours and the neighbourhood. I even felt the contagious joy of being at the home of someone famous.
The house is an attraction in itself. It is beautiful to look at, with an engaging, horror-themed fence and a large wooden bookcase carving. The gate was open, and it would have been easy to walk onto the property, but everyone who came to admire this author’s home respected the boundary. We were there for no more than five minutes, and there was a steady stream of fans. It is easily the most photographed home in all of Maine.
