A couple of years ago, I decided we would go to Alaska. As part of my initial research on this destination, I looked at things we can do when places close up for the day. One of the most annoying things we have discovered is that attractions like museums, heritage places, stores and others generally close around 5:00 PM, even during the height of the tourist season. We want to keep exploring, but with so much closing early, what is there to do?
Charlene and I discovered the love of murals. These are large artworks painted on the sides of buildings. These could relate to the history of the neighbourhood or could be entirely random in their themes. Plus, murals and walking from one to the next have no set hours. I save mural tours for after everything is closed.
Winnipeg is like many cities that now decorate their living spaces with art. It is a fantastic way to celebrate and keep the community looking beautiful. In our exploration of the capital of Manitoba, we visited one particular area in depth. On one street, several wildlife-themed paintings are on the garage doors of private residences.
Each of these murals is well-maintained and expertly done and helps beautify the space. We both appreciated the time, effort, and money spent displaying this art. I am glad that so many places are now adding murals and other forms of art into their communities.

- The original itinerary for this trip can be seen here. It does not include sites that we added on.
- I created a map of many of the murals in Winnipeg. This is far from a comprehensive list since so many are added yearly.
